VIK-2K and VIK-2K.mini EW Systems: Two Approaches to Drone Defense
Defika created two versions of an EW system for countering DJI Mavic-type drones – VIK-2K and VIK-2K.mini. Both systems address a single task: protecting mobile assault groups during deployment and while taking up positions. The difference between them lies in the additional capabilities each gives the soldier.
Why Portable EW Matters
DJI Mavic-type drones have become one of the main tools of harm on the battlefield: they are cheap, accessible, and allow precise ammunition drops on individual soldiers or small groups. For a long time, EW systems were designed mainly as stationary units or vehicle-mounted systems built to protect positions or convoys, not a unit on the move. This left a gap exactly where the threat is highest – the stage when a group has not yet reached cover or a vehicle. Portable EW, carried by the soldier himself, closes this gap: protection no longer depends on whether transport or a fixed position is nearby, but moves with the unit.
The VIK-2K EW System: Versatility and Control Over the Deployment Method
The VIK-2K EW system is built as an assault backpack, developed to order for the Air Assault Forces of Ukraine. Its key advantage lies in the wide range of ways it can be used. The same kit is equally ready for wear on the move and for deployment at a position.
- The antenna can be mounted on the backpack, held by hand, or set up on a tripod, depending on the task
- A remote cable up to 6 m long lets the operator control and power the system remotely, working from cover
- Three independent power sources – a built-in battery, a 220 V mains supply with simultaneous charging, and an external 24-30 V DC source
The field configuration with a single battery weighs about 10 kg, and a control unit on the backpack strap lets the operator check the battery charge without stopping. The system suppresses the 2380-2500 MHz and 5700-5900 MHz frequency ranges at 100 W of power and provides up to 2 hours of autonomous operation.
The VIK-2K.mini EW System: Maximum Lightness and Compactness
The VIK-2K.mini EW system addresses the same task of protecting mobile groups but focuses on minimal weight and a compact form factor. A MOLLE mount allows the device to attach directly to the soldier’s tactical gear, with the entire kit, including the antenna, built into a single module.
- Weight under 5 kg – one of the lightest EW systems in the Defika lineup
- Suppression range from 120 m
- Deployment to full readiness – up to 5 minutes in field conditions
- A universal 12-28 V connector fits a wide range of available batteries
A solid aluminum housing provides reliable protection for the electronics despite the compact design. The system likewise suppresses the 2380-2500 MHz and 5700-5900 MHz ranges at 100 W of power, with up to 2 hours of autonomous operation.
Which One to Choose
Both systems address the same task – protecting mobile assault groups from ammunition drops by DJI Mavic-type drones – and both fully meet it. VIK-2K adds flexibility in how it’s deployed: backpack, hand-held, tripod, control from cover. VIK-2K.mini adds extreme lightness to the soldier’s gear. In choosing between them, a unit isn’t deciding which system is more effective, but which additional capabilities the task at hand requires.
